From The President

The Delta Chi Fraternity,

Sitting down to write this, assuming my position as “A” of the Duquesne Chapter of the Delta Chi Fraternity, and having just completed back-to-back semesters as AMC, I was reminded of a quote in our New Member Education binder for the AM’s, “Character is what you do when nobody is looking.” As one our four core values, the character of our Chapter and each one of its members is what makes us the best Fraternity on campus. The character of a man is the greatest measure of his potential. As poet and artist Khalil Gibran said, “To measure you by your smallest deed is to reckon the power of the ocean by the frailty of its foam.” This is what continues to be our most noticed and telling virtue as a Greek organization.

Going into the 2010-2011 school year, I am excited to lead our Chapter into its 16th year at Duquesne and continue to be the leaders in the Greek community. Over the past year our “uncommon bond” has strengthened significantly, and our overall brotherhood has grown to new levels. The friendships that have been forged through Delta Chi that I’ve seen are both some of the most unlikely, and yet some of the strongest bonds that I’ve ever seen. It is this emphasis on our brotherly bonds that makes our character as strong as it is!

Our scholastic prowess has also been very successful, thanks Brother’s enthusiasm for and belief in our Scholarship Plan. We continue be in the upper echelon for highest Fraternity GPA’s. Education remains a source of pride for Delta Chi, and a constant priority from the moment an Associate Member takes his first vows to the Fraternity. It is this emphasis and pride in our ability to remain vigilant scholars that is telling of our character!

Justice, though one of our cardinal values, is always one of the more difficult to apply to the daily life of the Fraternity man. However, even this aspect of Delta Chi remains sturdy and prevalent, as our Brothers, including our newest members have shown an overwhelming commitment to responsibility, accountability, and living “the spirit of the law” to its fullest. It is this respect for our founding value that continues to be emblematic of our character!

Character is what you do when nobody is looking.” This is what makes our bond uncommon among all other Greek organizations on campus. This is what separates a Delta Chi from any other Fraternity man. This is what it means to embody the values of our Ritual. This is what it takes to be the best.

Writing this now, I am also reminded of the beginning of our Preamble, “…believing that great advantages are to be derived from a brotherhood of college and university men…” This is a promise we recite at every Chapter meeting, and is something that I will dedicate myself and the Chapter to work towards so that we may all reap the benefits of the Fraternity experience. It is this ideal that comprises our emblem, the hand of humanity reaching for the key of knowledge, and what we all seek to achieve through Delta Chi.

Going into next year we plan to continue to build upon the growth in important areas that our Chapter has gained over the past year. Reaffirming our commitment to excellence in philanthropy, fundraising, athleticism, leadership, recruitment and new member education, as well as continuing to maintain the high level of brotherhood in the Chapter, are our top priorities (and perhaps we’ll even pick up a President’s Cup while we’re at it!)

As founder Peter Schermerhorn Johnson said, “The fraternity man never graduates. He receives his diploma and leaves his alma mater for the larger affairs of the world.” But as long as his fraternity stands, “he is as much a part and parcel of it as in his undergraduate days.”

This is as true today as it was when Johnson wrote it. As of this semester, having initiated our largest pledge class of 17 men, Alpha Nu, the Duquesne Chapter of Delta Chi has initiated 281 Brothers into “the bond”. Subtracting our Chapter size, there are still over 200 alumni of the Duquesne Chapter that have come out of its short 16 years. I ask and encourage all of our alumni to visit us and support us in the success that you all have helped create for the current generations here on campus. Without your hard work, our character as a Chapter wouldn’t be as esteemed as it is today!

Wishing you all the very best from the Duquesne Chapter of the Delta Chi Fraternity!

In the Bond,

Cameron B. Barnett, “A”
